ABOUT THE DAYTON LADY HOOPSTARS
MISSION & GOALS
The Dayton Lady Hoopstars organization was formed to provide young women with an opportunity to play competitive basketball.
- Teach competitive basketball to all players within the organization.
- Provide the best coaches available.
- Provide a family environment for players, families, supporters and referees.
- Provide a venue for young women to demonstrate their skills to college recruiters in hopes of securing basketball scholarships.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Since 1996, DLH accomplishments include:
- Over 100 teams qualified for the AAU Division 1 National Championships, with 63 teams attending as Ohio State Champions.
- Over 60 teams have advanced to the Elite Sixteen at the AAU Division 1 National Championships with 10 National Champions, 11 National Runner-Ups, and seven Third Place National finishes.
WHAT TO EXPECT
- At the start of each season DLH will host preseason, informational meetings for players and parents. Time and place TBD.
- Tryouts take place in late February or early March (3rd – 8th grade) and late March (9th – 11th grade).
- Teams are selected by coaches and a group of evaluators during three days of OPEN tryouts. Our teams are not pre-selected and the rosters do change from year to year.
- The DLH season starts right after tryouts and runs through the end of May/early June for most teams and into the summer for those attending National Tournaments.
- Coaches usually keep 10-12 girls per team.
- Each age group usually has at least two teams and possibly as many as four teams depending on number and skill level of the players.
- Teams will generally practice twice a week around the greater Dayton area based on where the coach or players have access to gym time.
- Games are played by entering tournaments that take place on weekends. Each tournament usually consists of 3-5 games (or more).
- DLH program directors work closely with coaches to suggest schedules for all DLH teams. This process will hopefully reduce tournament entry fees and also allow multiple teams to travel to similar tournaments. Ultimately, each team schedule remains up to each individual coach/team.
- Most teams will play between eight and twelve tournaments for the season. Most tournaments are within 30-40 minute drive times but some teams do travel further on occasion and require hotel stays.
- All DLH teams are required to participate in the Ohio AAU State Championship and the AAU Division I National Championship if the team qualifies. DLH supports AAU.
- DLH usually hosts 2-3 tournaments each year. Those tournaments are AAU Super-Regionals, AAU State Tournaments and the Exploding to the Rim High School exposure tournament. Check the events section of the website for more details.
- DLH top teams usually attend the AAU National tournaments at the end of the season.
EXPENSES
· As a guideline, participation fees range from $300-$600 and are determined by the coach of each team.
· These fees COVER team expenses such as:
o coach’s expenses (hotels and general travel expenses)
o tournament entry fees
o practice gym time (this could significantly impact your team expenses)
o team incidentals such as postage, copying paperwork, etc.
· These fees DO NOT COVER:
o players/family travel expense, hotel rooms or meals
o uniform or apparel items
- DLH provides one of the best values in all of spring/summer basketball programs. Many other basketball programs and most other club sports programs charge $1,000 or more for the same features and benefits.
- After tryouts are completed, teams will collect a team fee from each player determined by the coach based on number of players on the team, cost of practice facilities, tournament fees, coaches travel expenses and any other team expenses.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
- It takes many people to make this organization successful. Each team will need a parent to handle each of the following: uniform disbursement, apparel ordering and disbursement, travel arrangements, team treasurer, tournament worker scheduler, and anything else the coach would need help with.
- You may be asked to work at the tournaments DLH hosts. These include Super-Regional, State and exposure tournaments. We need help taking money at the gate, keeping the book, operating the game clock and supervising the gyms. Volunteer!
- LET COACHES COACH!
- DO NOT EMBARRASS YOURSELF, YOUR DAUGHTER, OR DLH!
